All about Muay Thai
What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai is the national martial art of Thailand, known as the art of eight limbs because it uses eight points of contact: fists, elbows, knees and shins. It is one of the oldest and most effective striking systems in the world, with a tradition going back centuries. At Badazz Station, in Santa Maria da Feira, we respect that tradition while adapting the training to modern life, whether your goal is fitness, self-defence or competition.
What does a typical Muay Thai class look like?
Muay Thai classes at our academy in Santa Maria da Feira follow an adapted traditional structure. We start with a full warm-up of skipping rope, shadow boxing and mobility work. The technical part covers the fundamentals of Muay Thai: stance, guard, footwork, punches, kicks, knee and elbow strikes. We work on pads, the heavy bag and partner drills, building increasingly complex combinations. Advanced classes add clinch work (standing grappling) and technical sparring. Sessions end with conditioning: core work, endurance exercises and stretching.
Who is Muay Thai for?
Muay Thai at Badazz Station is for everyone, and you need no previous experience to start. We welcome beginners looking for an intense, different workout, practitioners who want a martial art with history and tradition, and competitors preparing for fights. It is also an excellent choice for MMA practitioners who want sharper striking, or for anyone who simply wants an effective way to stay fit and shake off the stress of daily life.
Physical and mental benefits
Muay Thai training is extremely complete. It builds cardiovascular endurance, explosive strength, flexibility (especially in the legs and hips), coordination and balance. It works the whole body, from the legs and core to the arms and shoulders. Mentally, Muay Thai teaches discipline, patience, resilience and focus. The Thai tradition values respect, humility and gratitude, values we pass on in every class.
What is the difference between Muay Thai and Kickboxing?
Muay Thai uses eight points of contact (punches, kicks, knees and elbows), while Kickboxing focuses mainly on punches and kicks. Muay Thai also includes clinch work (standing grappling), which does not exist in Kickboxing. At Badazz Station you can train both and find out which one suits your style.
